Yesterday I had the honor of being invited to The Green Shows at New York Fashion Week (www.thegreenshows.com) and I was pleasantly surprise! The show featured eco-friendly, ethically sound and fair trade fashions from eco-conscious collections by 7 designers: Bodkin, Izzy Lane, Bahar Shahpar, House Of Organic, Lara Miller, Mr. Larkin, and STUDY by Tara St. James.

The shows, which took place at King of Greene Street at 72 Greene Street in Soho, was a 2 day event sponsored in part by the Rainforest Action Network, who is working with fashion and luxury product companies to reduce the market demand for rainforest trees in packaging.

I was suppose to be there the first day also but I couldn't make it so I missed The Study, Bodkin and Bahar shows but I was able to catch Lara Miller, House of Organic, Mr. Larkin and Izzy Lane. (oh and because I am an absolute genius..I bought my camera but my batteries were dead and all the pics that I took on my blackberry looked like crap...oh well).

My two favorite shows were Lara Miller's (above pic) and Mr. Larkin's (below pic). I loved Lara's line because the clothes were very sexy and sultry. Her collection is made from organic cotton, hand-loomed wild-harvested bamboo, raw silk organza, vegan silk and recycled cotton fibers. The clothes are very flattering and playful. What's so cool about Lara's design on a whole is the fact that most of her garments can be wrapped, reversed, and flipped to reveal an entirely different look. Check out her website at www.laramiller.net to learn more about her and her designs.

Mr. Larkin's Spring 2010 left me speechless. It rocked! Designed by Casey Larkin, Mr. Larkin is a socially responsible and environmentally focused collection inspired by the "magic, mechanics and architecture of the vintage circus". The entire collection uses organic, sustainable or renewable textiles and practices, everything from organic cotton voiles and jersey; peace silk crepes dyed with blackberries, olives, fig leaves, acorn and sour grass; bamboo muslin dyed with madder plants; and tulle made from 100% Ingeo. All dyes are made from plants and vegetables in collaboration with natural artisan dyer, Sasha Duerr. I literally would wear anything from this line...anytime, anywhere. Check out www.mrlarkin.net to learn more about the designer and her line.

The show also made every effort to ensure that the production of the event was eco-friendly as well. John Masters Organics (www.johnmasters.com) was the official hair sponsor and Dex, an organic cosmetic line (www.dexnewyork.com) was the makeup sponsor. They also used energy efficient lighting and recycled, recyclable and compostable products when possible. Nice!
